Report recognizes the hospital’s accomplishments and challenges from Fiscal Year 2024
Hillsdale Hospital released its 2024 Annual Report to the community, covering results from its most recent fiscal year, which ended June 30. The report features the hospital’s five pillars of work—people, service, quality, finance and growth.
“This Annual Report reveals not only the great volume of work we’ve been engaged in but also our mission behind the work—to serve our community by being a guardian of exceptional health services for Hillsdale and its surrounding areas,” said Jeremiah J. Hodshire, president and chief executive officer at Hillsdale Hospital.
According to the report, between July 2023 and June 2024, the hospital’s admissions and patient care visits grew in almost every area. Hospital admissions totaled 260 in the skilled nursing facility, 412 in the psychiatric unit and 1,525 in acute care. The hospital team delivered 383 babies and performed 2,721 surgical procedures. The hospital and its clinics provided care for 372,646 outpatient visits and 19,095 visits in the emergency room. In Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24), the hospital also provided 7,534 home care visits.
During this reporting period, Hillsdale Hospital saw significant growth in its neurosurgery service with Dr. Amritraj Loganathan, who joined the hospital’s medical staff and list of specialists performing surgeries at Hillsdale Hospital. In collaboration with ProMedica, the hospital brought tele-oncology services to the community with an office for telehealth visits with ProMedica Physician Group oncologists and genetic counselors, as well as on-site access to nurse navigators.
“As we find new ways to grow and expand services to our community, our priority is always the people of Hillsdale County,” said Hodshire. “Services like neurosurgery and tele-oncology provide care close to home for our patients in the areas our community identified as the most necessary.”
Hillsdale Hospital has been engaged in several fundraising and development efforts, including the opening of a new donor-funded chapel, available to patients, staff and community members 24/7. In November 2023, they launched a $1 Million Capital Campaign to fund the purchase of six important pieces of equipment, which they aim to complete by the end of the calendar year.
In FY24, Hillsdale was the only hospital within a 30-mile radius to have a four-star overall rating based on areas of quality and a four-star patient survey rating from the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). The skilled nursing facility was one of only two nursing homes in a 25-mile radius to receive a five-star overall rating from CMS and was also named a Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report for the tenth time in 2023.
Hillsdale Hospital received the Performance Leadership 2023 Award for Excellence in Outcomes from The Chartis Center for Rural Health and was named a Healthcare Top Workplace by Energage. The environmental services team earned the Gallup Exceptional Team Award for its results on the annual employee engagement survey.
The hospital’s economic impact totaled more than $39.2 million, including salaries and wages, employee benefits, and capital investments. During FY24, the hospital’s payer mix was 46% Medicare, 22% Medicaid, 18% Blue Cross, 12% commercial and 2% uninsured.
“The hospital significantly improved operating income in FY24,” said Mark Gross, chief financial officer. “Our team accomplished this due to increased growth and improved efficiency in our clinics, among other reasons. While we will continue to face challenges, we are pleased with this fiscal year’s results and would like to express our appreciation for our employees, medical staff and community for their commitment to Hillsdale Hospital.”
