Fall 2024 Extra Inch Awards

Congratulations to our Fall 2024 Extra Inch Award winner, Makayla Weigle, a CNA in our Behavioral Health Unit! Going the “extra inch” is doing something above and beyond what is expected in service to a patient or their loved one. Their actions and/or words impressed you and truly made the patient or their loved one feel important and cared for in a way that had a special impact or stood out.

Makayla was nominated by her supervisor, Sheryll Gemmill, who admires Makayla’s empathy and endurance as she cares for her patients.

Makayla Weigle, RN, Behavioral Health Unit

Fall 2024 Extra Inch Award Winner

We have many difficult patients on our unit. The patient involved in this nomination is no different. This psychotic patient arrived on our unit with extremely matted hair and visible dandruff throughout. A few staff attempted to comb the patient’s hair with no success and gave up quickly as her entire scalp was covered with a thick mat of hair. Makayla was up for the task and spent over an hour combing and eventually cutting (with patient’s permission) the matted area. It was a huge job and I hope that she will get recognized for it. When I saw the patient, I told her how nice her hair looked and that was the first time I have seen this patient smile. Makayla did that.

Nomination by Sheryll Gemmill

Also nominated were Jason Flowers, CRNA, and Christy Belcher, Environmental services.

Jason Flowers, CRNA

Summer 2024 Extra Inch Nominee

I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for the exceptional care Jason provides for all patients. His expertise, compassion and unwavering
dedication has made a world of difference in the care and recovery of the patients here at Hillsdale Hospital. Jason goes above and beyond to ensure that our patients receive the best care possible while being a source of strength, support and guidance to the supervisors.
There are numerous examples of how he has helped; he has stayed at the end of his shift/case late into the evening, keeping an eye on moms in OB, ortho, urology, etc. He has also placed ultrasound IVs and lines on the floor and ER. I asked for help with a patient in CCU for NG tube placement after multiple attempts had failed by staff. Without hesitation he came to the floor and placed it. The patient’s family was very grateful that the trauma of continued reinsertion attempts were over.
Jason is just a great guy! If I was having a baby, hip replacement or other old lady things done, I would want Jason on my team.

Christy Belcher, Environmental Services

Fall 2024 Extra Inch Nominee

Christy does a lot of extra things without being asked to, which makes her outcome when cleaning excellent—such as using a scraper to get things off the floor if they wouldn’t come off from sweeping and mopping. She’ll move floor mats or empty chairs to clean thoroughly under them. When she is working in laundry, she keeps track of what floor she is doing so if something gets sent by accident she can return it to our residents. Overall, she manages her time very well, she gets through every room and does a great job in each room!

Nominated by Sidney Teats

Christy always finds things that have been overlooked that is thought of not being something that impacts our residents’ care. For example, she noticed that the trash container had remnants of trash and liquids in the bottom of it so she took the time to scrub the trash can out to get rid of the smell and prevent it from getting worse. When she is cleaning, she is thorough and takes the time to move furniture to clean around it. She notices when our residents are done eating and goes to the dining room to sweep and mop without us having to ask. She keeps track of what laundry came from where so if personal items are thrown into the laundry bags by accident, we get the items back in a timely manner. All around, she is detail oriented and determined to do better for our hospital.
