Gross again recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review
Hillsdale Hospital’s vice president and chief financial officer has once again achieved national recognition on Becker’s Hospital Review’s 2024 Rural Hospital CFOs to Know list. Mark Gross was named for the second time to the industry-leading publication’s list of the country’s top leaders in rural healthcare finance.
Gross made history last year as the first Hillsdale Hospital CFO to achieve this designation. According to Becker’s, “CFOs of rural hospitals are essential to the financial stability of their institutions. They develop strategies, secure funding and ensure affordability of care in support of rural patient populations.”
In the seven years he has served as Hillsdale’s CFO, Gross has advanced the hospital’s financial position and improved financial management. Most recently, he oversaw implementation of a financial strategy that led to a net revenue of 11 percent more than projected for fiscal year 2024. Part of that strategy included expense management, which resulted in an estimated six-figure savings per year moving forward.
“Mark continues to outperform every other CFO I have ever worked with,” Hillsdale Hospital president and chief executive officer Jeremiah J. Hodshire said. “His growth mindset is unique in a role that has a reputation for only focusing on cost-cutting. Rather, his decision-making process takes the whole picture into account—not just certain sections of the balance sheet.”
Gross also oversaw the implementation of software that allows for a more streamlined budgeting process with better monitoring. He placed a special emphasis on including management in the creation of their department’s budgets. Managers are directly involved in monitoring revenue and expenses to identify areas of concern or to highlight growth so resources can be allocated accordingly.
“Thanks in part to Mark’s financial leadership guiding the efforts of our entire management team, our hospital continues to remain financially viable in an environment where hundreds of rural hospitals are at immediate risk of closure,” Hodshire said. “We are able to vigorously pursue our mission to be a guardian of exceptional health services for our community because of our strong financial footing, which Mark continues to help us maintain.”
